Bali - 2017

2017

The flight from Taiwan to Bali was on our old favourite - EVA Air. We were rather surprised at the lengthy process of going through security and passport control, in Taipei, but eventually got to the EVA Air lounge and then picked up a delay of approximately one hour. We never made up the time on the flight but, fortunately, we were through formalities on arrival in Denpassar in, what seemed to be, record time. Unfortunately we could not get more than about 20 GBP equivalent from any ATM using any of our cards. Happily we had plenty of cash in 50GBP notes and we found an exchange booth offering a reasonable rate.

We were making up time! We were soon in our taxi and had travelled
almost 400 yards before we hit a dead stop. The traffic was appalling! Road works, traffic jams and an unfortunate road accident (not us), badly injuring a child, caused this to be the longest journey from Denpassar to Sanur that we could ever have imagined. By the time we reached the Maya, it was just over 13 1/3 hours since we left our Taipei hotel for a 5 hour flight to Bali. Oh the joys of jet-setting the world.........................................

The welcome at the Maya Sanur was superb. A friendly, helpful and efficient receptionist, a most welcome refreshing drink, a speedy transfer to our 3rd floor room and then a really pleasant surprise - one of the most stunning and well designed rooms that we have ever encountered. Stylish, but with plenty of hanging and drawer space and a spacious, well equiped, bathroom with separate bath and shower - an unusual combination in recent years! We quickly unpacked, hung up our clothes, showered and then headed for the coastal path to head for the main part of Sanur.

It was a beautiful evening with a gentle breeze moderating the heat and we began to believe that all our problems were behind us. Then, unfortunately, Janet tripped on a large stone on the unlit, uneven pathway. She fell cutting her knee and leg and worst of all, cutting her big toe very badly. We mananged to get back to our room and cleaned up the injuries using the medical supplies that we had brought. We didn't have sufficiently sized dressings nor did we have appropriate antiseptic cleaner to get the grime and grit from her toe. Off I rushed to the nearest pharmacy, whilst Janet soaked the wounds in the bath (thank heaven for that well laid out and equipped bathroom). I purchased the necessary supplies and returned. Janet was upset and her clothes were torn and bloodied, I was sweating and bloodied (Janet's blood) and our earlier feeling of elation had now completely disappeared. We managed to get her toe cleaned and dressed, but it would be more than a week until she could use the pool! Somehow, though, we slept well that night!

Though Janet's toe was very sore, she was able to walk reasonably well and with the appropriate dressing was able to laze by the pool. We got into a routine of breakfast, relax poolside, have lunch with champagne and a snack at the Tree bar, then poolside, then clean up, go back to bar, venture out to dinner, have a final cocktail in the bar - and then stagger to bed! We repeated this sequence, daily.

The bar staff thought that we were alcoholics with our bottle of champagne at lunch (in the 5 days leading up to Janet's bithday) and evening cocktails. Every evening we ventured further from the hotel and on Janet's birthday we made it to the Mezannine restaurant at the Puri Santrian which is where we stayed on our very first trip to Sanur, 10 years previously. Janet had the pawn and pomelo salad and the Australian steak that she had been promising herself, and finished with a Sabayon! Naturally this was all washed down with sparkly stuff and I don't believe that Janet felt any more discomfort from her toe that evening!

From that night onwards we kept, almost religiously to the schedule we had created for bad toe days, although we did go farther afield to eat in the evening and Janet was able to make use of the pool. We also moved down a gear to beer at lunchtime (lighter on the pocket), although we did continue with sparkly and cocktails in the evening. This was one of the most relaxing holidays that we have ever taken - and one during which, we probably did the least.

Our final 15 days were over too soon and we flew back for an overnight stay in Taipei, en-route to London via Bangkok. We had booked into the Novotel at the airport and arrived quite late from the only EVA flight of the day. If we had not been overly impressed with Taipei airport previously, this visit was a nightmare, taking almost two hours to get through immigration and collect our cases. We took a taxi to the hotel, where we only had about 6 or 7 hours until we once again departed for the airport. The staff at the Novotel were pleasant and efficient - and this was the only good feature of our visit. Our room was tired and not well supplied with toiletaries or even water! At the price charged, it was a hotel that I would not ever recommend.

We took the hotel's shuttle service to the airport, early the following morning and were surprised that check-in and passport control were only slightly worse then Heathrow, terminal 3, on a bad day! The EVA lounge was adequate and there was only a short delay on the outgiong flight, which was, in turn, delayed arriving into Bangkok, where we only just had sufficient time to use the EVA Air lounge to freshen up. After an uneventful flight back to London, we found that our bags were almost the first off the aircraft, immigration was smooth and efficient and we managed to surprise our eldest son, who picked us up, by being in the arrivals area a few minutes before he arrived!

Now what on earth are we going to do in the almost 4 weeks until our trip to Thailand in November?
