France - 2000

Around Easter, 2000, we had the chance to take a short break of a few days. Having visited France on many occasions we thought we would take in the Normandy area around Caen and the coastline.

Honfleur harbour

We stayed at a very pretty hotel, Le Cheval Blanc, which was centrally located on a quayside. The staff were excellent and friendly, but we felt that the accommodation was of a lower standard than anticipated. Honfleur is a very picturesque town with a lovely harbour and made a good base from which to explore the Normandy coastline.

Utah Beach Cemetery

Part of the American Cemetery overlooking Utah Beach

It is impossible to visit this coastline without taking in the D-Day invasion beaches and battlegrounds. I am not easily given to tears, but the emotional experience of this trip overcame me on more than one occasion - not least in the vastness and serenity of the cemetery overlooking Utah Beach.

It is difficult to imagine the carnage that took place there, whilst standing in the tranquil setting of the graveyard, but take one look at the open, featureless beach which is only a few yards away and you can imagine the killing zone below...........
