Fuerteventura - 2017

2017

Our trip to Fuerteventura was a bit of a last-minute affair, after we spotted a great deal on a 2 week package from Thomson, to the Riu Patace Tres Islas, where we first stayed in 1987! We upgraded the room and, as a bonus we, were able to fly Norwegian Air Shuttle. Some people may find this strange, but we have found them to be most acceptable.

Our flight out from Gatwick was OK, on a B737-800, with Recaro seats, providing good legroom. Following a slight technical delay, we pushed back about an hour late. Our arrival into Fuerteventura was therefore late, by a similar time, and our trip to the hotel seemed abnormally long.

The hotel provided a welcome drink, allocated rooms fairly speedily and announced that an evening meal had been arranged for us, even though the dining room had already closed.

Our allocated room was on a lower floor than we would have liked, but arriving at a fully booked hotel late and having made a last minute reservation, we were not unduly perturbed! Our room was not modern but it was well furnished and a good size, with great hanging and storage space and a reasonably large bath/shower room.

Over the next couple of weeks we just relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. We had last visited the island with our two youngest grand-daughters in 2014 staying at a sister hotel, the Riu Club Hotel Oliva Beach. Having visited the island several times, we did not intend sightseeing - just relaxation. We found the Tres Islas to have changed somewhat. The staff were, almost without exception, excellent. There seemed to be fewer of them, however, and they were almost rushed off their feet at times. This was particularly noticeable in the Bar and restaurant and, to a lesser extent, the pool area.

The food at this hotel was always excellent. Whilst it was still good, the restaurant seemed to be slightly more chaotic with a less appealing choice of menu. The service in the, always busy, bar was slower - although still polite and good. The pool was less tidy and it could be difficult to get towels exchanged. Nevertheless, it was still a good break and it would be wrong to think that there was any fundamental problem with the hotel.

A new feature to us was a small, fully serviced, dining room which was quiet, tasteful and a very civilised experience. We ate there twice during our stay and thoroughly enjoyed the food, the service and the stylish surroundings. The only let down was the limited menu - 3 choices of main course - which was never changed in the two week duration of our stay. Such a pity.

We ventured into Corralejo village only once. It is a quick journey by cab, at about 8 Euro each way, or by bus (there are two per hour from outside the supermarket on the main road). We had a not inexpensive meal at a restaurant, whose name I cannot remember, on the waterfront. The best part of the meal was the chocolate mousse for dessert. We did not think that the time taken travelling into town, or the town itself, was worth the effort of a further visit, so we just enjoyed the excellent beaches to the North and South of the hotel, the pool, the bar and the restaurants of the hotel.

Our second week at the hotel just flew past. We reminisced about our visits to the island over the last 30 years and how much we have enjoyed it. We remembered the people that we had met and the fun that we have had. It is so different from most trips that we make these days - will we return? Never say Never.

Our transfer to the airport was painless, but the check-in was painfully slow and poorly organised. Nevertheless, we had a good flight back to the UK and, even though Gatwick was crowded at 1:00 am, we obtained our bags fairly quickly and were soon being driven home!
