Germany - 2004

Germany 2004 was a quick trip to see friends who we hadn't seen for a while. They live about mid way between Dusseldorf and Solingen and we were able to pick up Lufthansa flights from Heathrow to Dusseldorf at an amazingly low price.

Flights were good and on time and we were collected from the airport by our friends. A most relaxing break, in excellent company, visiting places in Germany that we hadn't been to before.

Opladener Str - Solingen

Solingen has been the centre of quality steel production for many years and many parts of the outlying area boast buildings of great beauty. The area was extensively damaged during the last war, however some gems still remain.

In addition to visiting Dusseldorf, we were taken to Wuppertal and travelled on the Schwebebahn (floating tram) and visited Schloss Burg a reconstructed middle age castle, originally built in the 12 century with the latest reconstruction being completed in 1925.

German hospitality, and the love of beer, can still be experienced in hostelries such as the Alt Rupelrath, serving honest to goodness, great value food and, naturally, some excellent German beer and wine. Additionally we were taken to some local restaurants (unfortunately the names - even those that we could pronounce - of these places now escape me) and were never disappointed.

This was an excellent, relaxed trip giving a great flavour of German hospitality.
