Lanzarote - Playa Blanca June 2018

We arrived at Gatwick with plenty of time to spare until our Norwegian flight to Lanzarote and were very speedily checked in. We made our way through security (longish queue) to airside departures where we headed for Weatherspoons. A table, snacks and drinks can be obtained here to while away the time, in relative comfort, until departure. Having spent a good while in the aptly named "Flying Horse" and spending far less on refreshment and snacks than we would have by booking a lounge, we made our way to the departure gate and were fairly quickly embarked to our reserved seats on a newish 737.

The extra legroom seats, staff and flight in general could not be faulted and we were pleasantly surprised at how soon we were arriving at Arrecife where disembarkation and transit through arrivals was relatively painless. It was only when we fell into the hands of TUI staff for a long walk with our cases, including up a steep ramp to a higher level, for our coach transfer that we hit reality. Hmm! Note to self and others - take a taxi from this airport!

Neverheless the coach transfer was reasonably comfortable and, despite being the last drop off, we were at our hotel fairly quickly, checked in to our Privilege room (following a glass of fizzy stuff, as a welcome) and we were off for a meal in the restaurant, which was still open!

Our room was on the 3rd floor of the Western wing, about 15 rooms away from the lifts, in a quiet location with a good sea view, over the smaller pool, to Lobos - and beyond to the dunes of Corralejo, on neighbouring Fuerteventura.

It was a quite well appointed room, for a 4* hotel, with a good balcony and having sufficient drawer and hanging space, a safe, a stocked refrigerator, and coffee machine etc. Typical of most Spanish hotels there was very little water supplied! The bright bathroom looked very nice with single wash basin, bidet, WC but it was let down slightly by having a narrow, slippery, plastic bath with a shower over. This was however improved the following day by requesting a non-slip in-bath mat.

We spent the latter part of the first evening just unpacking and getting our stuff in order for the following day. We resolved to have breakfast in the Kasbah a-la-carte restaurant, rather than in the main buffet restaurant and investigate the option of dining there in the evening, as part of our Privilege package. We never regretted this choice, despite having a limited number of dishes on the a-la-carte menu. I must add that breakfast in the Kasbah restaurant was, in my opinion, excellent - but it certainly added more than a just few millimeters to my waistline!

The following morning, after a most satisfying breakfast, we decided to try the pool. The water in the main pool was rather cold (end June/early July) so, after this first day, we tended to use the covered pool next to the Privilege sun lounger area (which we also tended to use). We never had a problem with obtaining beds / shades even around the main pool. The hotel has a policy (thankfully enforced) which denies people leaving unattended towels and reserving loungers before 09:30. An excellent idea causing several guests to do the "walk of shame" to collect their belongings that had been removed by the pool staff!

With the abundance of food available on our half board package, we opted to only have a light snack at lunch time. We found that the Privilege lounge selection of nibbles was excellent for this light refreshment, particularly as complementary fruit and drinks / cocktails were provided at your sun lounger! We also availed ourselves of refreshment in the lounge when leaving the pool area and for pre and post dinner drinks. We found that most of the other guests were a very friendly and helpful bunch who seemed to get on very well together. Indeed we met some very nice and interesting people

In the evenings, unless we were eating out in Playa Blanca town, we just tended to take a stroll or have a cocktail in Thahiche lobby bar, where there was live music in the evenings - and very pleasant cocktails! There was a further bar with shows / entertainment, but we found this to be rather too crowded for our liking.

During the day various activities were put on for guest's benefit by the H10's "Blue Team".
As one who does not participate in very many organised activities, I found myself joining in a few things partly due to the persuasiveness of the other guests and partly because of the sheer enthusiasm and sense of fun within the team.

There are a couple of supermarkets and a few restaurants within 2 or 3 minutes near Playa Flamingo, which is very handy. The Port of Playa Blanca is an easy walk, as is Playa Blanca town where a good selection of shops and restaurants may be found. Taxis are easy to come by and not exorbitantly priced charging about Euro3.50 from hotel to town. We took to strollng down to the Port for exercise after breakfast and before the hellish task of hitting the sun-loungers for some serious relaxation! (or the challenge of Boules, or Crazy Golf or Archery or even Rifle Shooting!)

We ventured into Playa Blanca a few times in the evening, where I must make a mention of a great reataurant with excellent food and lovely views - La Chalanita. We found the food here to be perfectly to our taste with a varied and fairly extensive menu, in the medium to upper price range, and I have no hesitation in recommending it. Booking is, most definitely, advised.

Will we return to Lanzarote? - Yes (A trip is already booked for late September). Will we return to Timanfaya Palace? Yes (It is already booked for July 2019)). Will we eat again at La Chalinita - Yes, the next time we are in Playa Blanca!

All in all this was a very pleasant break and the flight back to UK was as good as our outward flight had been. Thank you Norwegian!

So, to summarise; a great holiday in a good hotel, with very good flights. We met some interesting people, we ate good food and we relaxed. What more could we want?
