Tenerife - May 2019

2019

As the May half term approached
, we realised that we had the chance to zoom off to the Canary Islands with our youngest grandchild (age 7). Such an opportunity that was not to be missed saw me looking urgently through websites for all-inclusive packages, with flights, in the 8 day window available, that was not ridiculously priced. We found a family suite in the Bahia Principe Tenerife available at a good price through Thomas Cook and it was booked and paid for in an instant. We were able to book decent seats too - so far so good, but we noted that the aircraft was full and wondered if all would be OK. We need not have worried. The flight out was excellent, simple bag drop, speedy security, time for lunch before boarding, a very good flight, landing on time and then a speedy pre-booked taxi to the hotel.

Check in was fairly quick and we were quite impressed with the appearance of the hotel. We were shown to our suite, which was on the smallish side but quite adequate. Immaculately clean and appearing to be recently updated, we were delighted with everything except for the rather inadequate air conditioning which meant that the room was always on the warm side. We had arrived in time for evening dinner and were pleased with the well laid out and appointed buffet restaurant
and the fact that our grandson easily found something which he liked. Wow; could this be true!

After dinner we headed for the all-inclusive bar, where there was live music on the terrace. Staff and entertainment were both very good and the drinks were of a good standard - not like some watered-down versions that as we had experienced in other hotels. The routine of dinner, followed by a few drinks on the terrace became an established routine for the duration of our stay and the variety of hot and cold beverages, which were suitable for our grandson, enabled us to ensure that he was taking enough liquid and kept him immensely happy. We turned in to bed on that first evening very tired and well satisfied with the aspects of the hotel that we had experienced so far.

The following morning saw us heading for breakfast, believing that all was fine. We noted that there was a good selection (including everything that our grandson could have wished for) and plenty eggs, bacon, English style sausage, baked beans and a myriad of other dishes that suited me - could this be true? We finished our rather leisurely breakfast and headed off to the pools but discovered, to our horror, that most sun loungers were reserved. We did manage to find 3 together set back from the pools but found that the pool which was nearest was freezing cold, unlike the other larger pool which was heated and the children's pool which was shallow enough to be quickly warmed by the sun. We vowed that we would be less leisurely over breakfast in future and reserve loungers (as did others) before going to breakfast.

Our grandson quickly found a girl of about his age and, once they found out that they were both "Minecraft" players, a firm friendship was established (and we believe that UK "play dates" will be organised). They were inseparable. Pool time, various activities and entertainment slots were shared. Her parents were extremely pleasant too, so we were delighted to also share their company.

The Staff, the entertainment, the facilities, the food and beverages and now the guests exceeded our wildest expectationes, and where we had some concerns, we found that we needn't have worried. Where we had anticipated being worried, we were able to relax. Our grandson was extremely well behaved (though excited and enjoying everything). The hotel was safe for him, the entertainment and activity staff were excellent with children and we actually felt that we were on holiday!

The main drawback was tht there was nothing to do in the immediate vicinity of the hotel - no shops, no restaurants, no bars! We had a choice of a la carte restaurant for 50% of the nights at the hotel and opted for the Asian restaurant, the Brazilian Rodizio and the Italian - all of which made a nice change and where the food, although by no means stunning, was certainly edible - even to our grandson, who amazed us with his appetite!

We took a taxi for a day out at the “Aqualand” water park, and a most enjoyable day it was too! We managed to get concessions as "seniors" and therefore paid the same price as for child tickets! Immediately, I was pressured into going on the water slide. Our grandson was duly measured and we were advised that the green slide with a blue 2 person inflatable "boat" would be the best. What we didn't know that "best" actually meant "highest"! So, padding off up innumerable steps, reaching the top completely breathless, we settled into our "float", ensured that we had a tight grip and were then off. Well the slide, also had two "whirlpools" to add to the excitement. The first one got us!. It tipped us out and from that point onward we were just dragged down the slide by our float. We were both hanging on for grim death, fearing for our lives at the second "whirlpool" where we were shot down the final length like two drowned rats, propelled by a deluge through a flooded drainpipe. I was told afterwards that I appeared at the bottom like a deathly white apparition. Neither grandson nor grandad attempted any of the high slides again.

Our grandson found the childrens area and spent time there until a special visit, that we had arranged, to get up close (poolside ledge) to the dolphins and learn some commands and actually touch them (the highlight of a very good day). Then it was off to lunch in the shade (hot dog and burgers - which were most acceptable). After lunch Nana and Grandson floated down the lazy river and then we all headed off to the dolphin display, which was excellent - and which focussed on the protection of sea mammals and creatures and the ecological impact of humankind. A well put together attraction.

We were then off to our hotel for dinner and then started the routines all over again - Grandson making new friends (his early girlfriend had returned to UK), playing crazy golf, archery, football, tennis and wearing grandad out walking around the lava flows looking for various rocks - a routine that pleased him enormously.

Our excellent week was soon over and we took a taxi back to the airport where there was a lengthy check-in queue, slow security and finally a hold up for border / immigration checks as the police, responsible for the checks, never turned up until after our plane was due to depart. This, in turn, meant that the pilot missed his departure slot and we returned to Gatwick on a full aircraft with crying children (not ours), landing after midnight, just to remind us of how bad the whole trip could have been!

Oh well - arriving back in the early hours of Sunday means that our next holiday, to Lanzarote, is only 28 days away!
