Thailand - Hua Hin March 2018

2018

Our trip to Thailand in March was booked, in its entirity, through Trailfinders and the service, from enquiry to completion was excellent, despite a small problem with our first transfer where we experienced a frightening journey with a poor driver, provided by their local ground agent (Exotissimo). We arrived from London following a good flight on EVA Air and, having priority baggage, were soon out of the airport. Unfortunately we were then subjected to the worst transfer ever. We arrived at the Anantara (where we had not stayed for about 10 years) in one piece - and almost in record time. We were quicky booked in and shown to our Lagoon room which was a good size and precisely as we recalled. As the Anantara is a way out of town we decided to spend the evening unpacking and had a very dry Club Sandwich in our room. Unfortunate really as it was the Anantara's Club Sandwich which they were serving on our first visit there in 2004, which initially got me hooked on them - oh well nothing remains the same!

The following day we made arrangements to meet various friends during out visit including a couple from Stoke on Trent, who we had first met in 2012 on a trip up the Irrawaddy in Burma, who were staying at the Centara! Arrangements made we worked hard at relaxing, both on the seafront and at the Lagoon Suite private pool. A great feature was the complementary soft drink service at the pool bar and cocktails in the early evening. Whilst the cocktail sessions were not of the same standard as the Club offerings at the Hyatt or Centara they were, nevertheless, a welcome interlude and offered the opportunity to get to know some of the other guests - many of whom were regular visitors to the Anantara. Staff and service for the pool area, bar and cocktail sessions were excellent and we were able to relax from the word go.

We spent most of our days just chilling out and most of our evenings in Hua Hin or at Bill and Jang's garden bistro, "Tea Time", just North of the Anantara near Palm Hills golf course. We always enjoy the food, ambience and company of Jang and Bill - Jang is an excellent cook! We, naturally, also ate at "Angie's Bistro" in Soi 80, with a couple who we met at the hotel who had never been there, at "Bird Chilli" in the Night Market with Rob and Lin, at Siggi's German restaurant where we met up with Hu, ate Italian food and Thai food and generally stuffed ourselves. Unfortunately Kian, widow of an ex-colleague was away, visiting her family near Khon Kaen.

We had only opted to spend a week in Hua Hin and all too soon we were off to Suvarnabhumi for our flight to Phuket, en-route to Khao Lak. The transfer to the airport was excellent and we felt much more comfortable this time and the driver was excellent. We had internal flights arranged with Bangkok airways and the check-in was straightforward. The airport was busy and, as the flight was economy class only, we made use of the Bangkok Airways general lounge which was adequate and quite a blessing as we had a fairly long wait at the airport - as we did, indeed for all internal flights.
