Thailand - January 2018

2018

Our trip to Thailand in January was a spur of the moment "extra". As usual we were looking for offers and spotted 2 weeks at the 5* Dusit Thani in Pattaya, including flights, for less than £1000 per person! Being fed up with the miserable and cold weather and never having visited Pattaya, we decided to give it a go!

The flight, as usual on EVA Air, was good and we were early into Bangkok. Our cases were off very quickly and we were to be picked up by a company that we had never used before, Nam's Taxi Service, who use only lady drivers and who had good reviews online. This proved to be a great choice, and we met up as planned and had a good trip in a very clean vehicle to our hotel. The choice of transport was probably the best choice that we made in Pattaya!

We arrived at our hotel, the Dusit Thani in about 1 1/2 hours and were rapidly checked in, but not shown to our room - just given the keys, which was most unusual. Oh dear, what a letdown. Old, tired room, dirty carpets, loose fittings - nothing 5* about this! I returned to reception and asked to be moved but agreed to spend the first night in this room (527) as it was the weekend and the hotel was full.

The following day we were shown more rooms. After looking at an alternative room, which once again featured a dirty carpet, but this time also lacked a bath, we decided to pay for an upgrade to a Club room on the 7th floor (706). With the exception of the carpet, once again, the room was reasonable and benefitted from having a separate bath and shower plus club facilities, including breakfast, snacks and soft drinks, canapés in the evening, 3 pieces of laundry daily - typical club facilities.

Despite continuing to suffer from very poor housekeping service we were able to make the most of the Dusit's pools and the Club facilities - including an excellent breakfast daily, in the "Peak" restaurant. The Club staff were excellent, although the club itself had insufficient space for guests - and the cocktail / canapé session could be noisy. The canapé buffet consisted of mainly cakes and desserts, salad and fruit items - not at all typical of other hotels' club facilities and the pushing, shoving and noise of some other guests was, to say the least, off-putting. It is fair to say that we will think twice (no, many times) before choosing a Dusit hotel again.

We spent most of our days relaxing around the pools, prefering the upper, lagoon, pool - where a reasonable breeze could usually be felt. The other "Chaba" pool was also more than adequate and we also enjoyed our time there.

There were several restaurants within walking distance and we found that the inexpensive "Cascades" restaurant within the hotel was very handy for the occasions when we wanted something quick or a late night snack. Believe it or not we experienced some difficulty in finding a decent Thai restaurants, close to the hotel. Local restaurants, in the main, seemed to cater for mainly European tourists, although most had a selection of Thai dishes. We are unable to recommend any Thai food outlet.

We found a very nice and reasonably priced Italian restaurant with the somewhat unappealing name, "Grottino". Both staff and food were very good and we ate there several times. We walked extensively in the evenings (to find a decent Thai restaurant perhaps?) including to the bar area (around Soi 6) and the infamous (but actually very tame) Walking Street. Perhaps Pattaya has catered for a certain type of Farang tourist for too long! We were not particularly taken with the town.

Nevertheless, despite what may seem as many negative points, we did not regret our visit - we relaxed, away from the January weather in the UK and certainly made the most of our visit, although we wish that we had booked some trips with Nam's Taxi Service, who we later learned also provided escorted excursions by taxi and even a golf partner, should one be required!

We only had 14 nights in Pattaya and our visit soon drew to a close. We had booked Nam's taxi for our return trip to the airport and found very light traffic to Bangkok (on a Sunday Morning) - thank goodness for the EVA Air lounge at Suvarnabhumi!

The queues at the airport for security and pasport control were very long and much slower than usual but, the flight back to UK was excellent. The electronic passport readers at Heathrow seemed to be working well and we were soon collecting our cases, which had travelled "priority". Although our incoming flight had a slight landing delay we were actually heading off down the M25 earlier than usual - a real bonus!
