Thailand - March 2016

2016

A new year and we had itchy feet!. It was now February, no medical appointments until the end of March - what could we find!

Trailfinders, once more, came up trumps with a very well priced trip to Hua Hin, staying in the Hilton. Despite our many trips to Hua Hin and the Hilton being particularly well located we had never considered staying there, prefering more of a "garden" setting. Trailfinders, however, came up with a 20 day trip, with both a 30% hotel discount and an upgrade to an executive room, flying EVA premium economy at a price that we could not resist. The good news was that the dates fitted perfectly with my next specialist appointment. So, with a little over 4 weeks until departure we had something to look forward to!

We had very good flights by EVA and managed to get a pair of window seats in a good position, despite the flight being full! We saved quite a bit by booking our transfer directly with Taxi Hua Hin and, after getting a top-up for our Thai SIM we were on our way to Hua Hin.

The object of this holiday was just to relax and look up friends. We were quite delighted with our room, clean, bright and spacious. We decided to upgrade to Club facilities and to just relax. The pool was very pleasant, with new sun loungers and umbrellas, but it was also very crowded. We had great difficulty getting any shade as the loungers were so tightly packed that it was difficult to move the umbrellas into a position to block the sun. We were deternined not to let this spoil our visit - but this fact alone will probably stop us from returning to this hotel.

First mention should go to the breakfast in the main buffet restaurant. There was ample selection of good quality food, but the restaurant tended to be noisy.

The second mention must go to the Club lounge. Oh dear. Small, slow service, poor breakfast selection, food poorly cooked with chilled items frequently being too warm and a poor selection evening canapes and drinks. It would be fair to say that this was, by far, the poorest "Club" facility that we have encountered in many years of travel.

Final mention of this hotel must be the White Lotus restaurant at the top of the building. We had an excellent Chinese meal here one evening, from their extensive menu. We also had a couple of ex-pat friends and their wives join us for a Dim Sum lunch. Excellent selection, excellent quality and excellent value. Great fun for lunchtime treat with friends, at a fixed price! We can thoroughly recommend that everyone should try this and can't imagine anyone being disappointed!

Our time was spent, essentially, at the pool during the day and at various restaurants in the evening. We thoroughly enjoyed our evenings, spent mainly with friends. Restaurants of particular note (other than those at the Hilton) were:

Carlos Italian Restaurant (opposite the main entrance to the Centara) always excellent Italian food. I wish it was near to where we live in UK!

Angie's Bistro (Soi 80). An excellent small restaurant. Small but adequate menu, expertly prepared and lovingly cooked! One not to miss.

Sara Janes (Poonsuk Road). Above average garden style restaurant with an extensive Thai and European menu. Has expanded over the years and has live entertainment.

Saeng Duean "Treffpunk bei Siggi" (Opposite side of road from Centara rear entrance) - Uninspiring to look at but good value German and Thai dishes in a friendly atmosphere.

Food Court - Soi 88 and Food Court next to Big "C". A wide range of various dishes. At Soi 88 try the steaks from "Go Bang" and at "Big "C" try the Tika Massala from the Indian lady's stall!

We spnt some quality time with friends. We ate, we drank and we just passed the time. We should like to particularly thank Kian, Bill & Jang and Chris & Yo for their company. It was also good to catch up with Sara Jane, who we had not seen for many years. We also had a think about absent friends - especially Richard and Patrick who both died last year.

Hua Hin is changing quite rapidly, but is still as recognisable as it was on our first visit. We will return.

We took Taxi Hua Hin for our transfer for an uneventful flight back to UK. We are still convinced that the EVA direct flight from Heathrow to Bangkok takes some beating!
