Thailand - Nov 2017

2017

Following two special birthdays this year, one in Thailand and one in Bali, we had to think hard about a special place for our Golden Wedding Anniversary - a place that we not only like, but one where we feel comfortable. Immediately after my birthday in February, we had decided that we would return to Hua Hin and to the Hyatt Regency. Arrangements were made, flights booked and all that remained was to get ourselves there - by EVA Air of course!

We had splendid flights from Heathrow, leaving on 11th November and arriving into Bangkok on 12th. The immigration queues were not too bad and our bags were just arriving on the carousel as we approached it! My Thai SIM (which I had retained for many trips) decided that it would no longer work but I was able to obtain a tourist SIM, exchange some cash and meet our pre-booked car easily and speedily. Taxi Hua Hin, who we always use, had sent a very nice Toyota SUV, the driver was excellent and we were whisked off to Hua Hin in style. A great start to our anniversary break.

Arriving at the Hyatt reception we were welcomed like old friends, checked in speedily and whisked off to our favourite room overlooking a pond, with a view to the sea. On arrival at our room we found that it had been decorated to welcome us. A bottle of wine and assorted cold cuts, fruit and cheese had been left out for us. As it was, by that time, mid-evening, this was a lovely and most welcome gesture, arranged by the club staff and Director of Rooms.

The welcome within the Regency Club seemed to go on for several days, as the club staff shifts rotated. We were made to feel like honoured guests! The General Manager and Director of Rooms were both excellent to the extent that, when made aware that we wanted to bring guests to dine on our anniversary, they arranged for the executive chef to meet us and to lay on some Australian steak and lamb, as our Thai friends always craved good Western food!

On the day of our anniversary we were treated to a special breakfast with sparkling wine, on a table decorated with special linen and flowers, our sun loungers and parasol were decorated - even our towels were wrapped in gold ribbon. In the evening we went into the club lounge for a drink, prior to our guests arriving, to be met once again with a decorated table and sparkling wine - it is fortunate that we were still able to stand, when it was time to dine!

The executive chef met up with us as our guests arrived, went through the special menu in detail, assisted us in our choice of wine (loads more fizzy stuff and a great Aussie Red) and ensured that an excellent evening was had by all! It is worth noting that all chose either steak (always a favourite with Kian, our friend Richard's widow) or French cut, lamb chops! A truly excellent meal, enjoyed in beautiful surroundings and served by staff who seemed to enjoy pleasing us. A day and evening to remember!

We meant to relax on this holiday and that is precisely what we did. By day, we lazed around the pool. In the evening we had canapes and a lot of sparkly wine in the Regeny Club lounge. We then, usually, went out to dine. Whilst the restaurants that we used are too numerous to mention, "La Botte", Italian Restaurant (near the Hyatt), of course "Angie's Bistro" (Soi 80 -Thanks Tanida excellent as usual), "Siggi's Treffpunkt" (near the Centara) and Jang's new garden restaurant, "T-Time", as well as "Bird Chilli" in the night market, were well frequented.

We naturally spent several evenings with Kian (Richard's widow), Bill and Jang and a few other friends. As always the time flew past, far too quickly, and our two week trip seemed to be over far too soon.

Taxi Hua Hin whisked us off to Bangkok airport and to the delights of various sweet and savoury dumplings in the EVA lounge. We had a good flight home and tried, heroically, to keep the champagne flowing en-route.

Our thanks go out to the Directors, Chef and
all staff at the Hyatt Regency, Hua Hin. We will not forget either our anniversary, or your kindness and service!
